Post surgery:

On more than one occasion post-surgery we have been recommended to give Ripley Tixylix by the vet to soothe throat irritation from the Endotracheal Tube used during surgery. It has worked for Ripley but obviously check with your vet before you give it to your dog !

Tixylix (specifically the children's "Tickly Cough" glycerol-based formula) is sometimes used by dog owners as an over-the-counter remedy for kennel cough or minor, dry, tickly throat irritations. While some anecdotal advice suggests it is safe for most dogs, it is not a veterinary-licensed product, and it is crucial to use only the version containing glycerol.

Important Safety Information:

  • Check Ingredients: Do not use formulations containing Xylitol (an artificial sweetener highly toxic to dogs), acetaminophen, or high levels of alcohol.
  • Potential Side Effects: The glycerin in the syrup can cause diarrhea in some dogs.
  • Consult a Veterinarian: It is always best to consult a vet before giving human medication, particularly if your dog is old, has other health issues, or is coughing severely.

Keeping busy post surgery:

  • Puppet play
  • Hand guessing
  • 3 cups
  • scent training (in small space)
  • Magic tricks - hiding treat or toy then making it appear somewhere else (behind ears)
  • Kong
  • Lick mat
  • Snuffle Toys
  • Massage
  • Grooming
