Red Laser Therapy for Dogs

"Red laser" for dogs generally refers to Photobiomodulation (PBM), also known as Cold Laser Therapy or Red Light Therapy. It uses specific wavelengths of light—typically visible red (600–700nm) and near-infrared (700–1000nm)—to stimulate cellular repair and reduce pain

How It Works

  • Cellular Energy: Light photons are absorbed by the mitochondria (the cell's "powerhouse"), increasing the production of ATP, which provides energy for faster tissue repair.
  • Pain & Inflammation: The therapy triggers the release of endorphins (natural painkillers) and reduces inflammatory chemicals.
  • Circulation: It encourages vasodilation (widening of blood vessels), bringing more oxygen and nutrients to damaged areas.

Common Uses

  • Osteoarthritis & Joint Pain: Relieves stiffness and improves mobility in senior dogs.
  • Wound Healing: Speeds up recovery for surgical incisions, hot spots, and lick granulomas.
  • Soft Tissue Injuries: Effective for muscle strains, ligament tears, and tendonitis.
  • Spinal Conditions: Often used to support dogs with IVDD (disc disease).
  • Professional vs. Home Devices
  • Clinical Lasers (Class IV): High-power devices found at vets. They penetrate deeper and require fewer, shorter sessions (3–10 minutes) but carry a risk of burns if used improperly.
  • Home Devices (LED/Class IIIb): Usually handheld wands or wraps. These are lower power and safer for home use but typically require longer, more frequent sessions (15–30 minutes) and may only reach superficial tissues.

Safety & Precautions

  • Eye Protection: Both the dog and the operator must wear protective goggles ("doggles") for clinical lasers, as the beam can damage the retina.
  • Contraindications: Do not use over cancerous tumours (as it can stimulate growth), pregnant bellies, growth plates in puppies, or active bleeding.
  • Veterinary Referral: In the UK, you must have a veterinary diagnosis and referral before starting laser therapy for a medical condition.
